Dear Friends,

In Parshat Va’etchanan, Moshe pleads with Hashem to enter the Land of Israel, but his request is denied. Instead of dwelling on his disappointment, Moshe turns his focus to inspiring the Jewish people. He recounts the Ten Commandments and delivers the Shema, Judaism’s central declaration of faith.

This shift teaches a powerful lesson: Sometimes, our personal prayers may go unanswered, but we still have a mission to uplift others. Moshe models selflessness and leadership by prioritizing the nation’s spiritual growth over his own longing.

The Shema reminds us to love Hashem “with all your heart, soul, and might”, in joy and in challenge. Even when life doesn’t follow our plan, we are called to serve with devotion.

Moshe’s example encourages us to transform personal setbacks into opportunities to inspire, teach, and strengthen our community. That’s true leadership and true faith.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Chaim Steinmetz
